1    Video diary entry one, December twelfth two thousand and seven. So,
2    I’m going to be having gastric bypass surgery in six days I’m really
3    excited. I’m look forward to having a new body, a new life, a happier
4    healthier me. Umm a little nervous about the pain I’m gonna feel when
5    I come out surgery but it’s over shadowed by how excited I am about
6    having the surgery so, I’m really looking to having a new body and
7    doing activities I haven’t been able to do in years. Erm, I’ve had pretty
8    crappy health for a while you know, so I’m looking forward to feeling
9    better, being able to be more active, get involved in sports or you know
10    little things like being able to tie my shoes without hurting, being able
11    to ride rollercoasters without having to ask for a seatbelt extension or
12    same thing with an aeroplane, that is so embarrassing. Erm, so, I’m just
13    putting myself out there right now, I’m sure there are people out there
14    who can understand, how I feel, and can relate to what I’m talking
15    about, there are other people out there who I know have never had a
16    weight problem and don’t know what it’s like so, maybe you can see
17    this video and learn something from it. Mmm it’s not as simple as just
18    shutting your mouth and quitting eating. It’s not like that at all, because
19    believe me I have tried, it doesn’t work. So, I’ve made some pretty
20    positive changes already, lost eleven and a half pounds, they’ve had me
21    on a pure liquid diet, which is, not, easy. Um, I’ve had nothing but
22    soups and water and sugar free jello and sugar free pudding, and light
23    yoghurt that’s it, that’s all I’ve been allowed to have so it’s not easy um
24    especially when people are eating in front of you and yeah and you’re
25    hungry all the time though I’m really looking forward to the surgery and
26    being able to escape from the addiction of food, which is what I have,
27    it’s not easy to say, but that’s the case I appreciate you all for allowing
28    for me to be candid and hopefully learnt something or can relate to
29    how I feel. Thank you and I will be posting another video before I go in
30    for surgery and I will be posting a  video when I come home, so
31    hopefully I’ll look quite a bit different when you see me again, thanks.

Video 2: Roberta

32    Hello, um my name is Roberta, urm this is my first YouTube posting, my
33    channel’s called weigh-too-funny. And basically, I, am, going to post
34    about my presurgery weight loss, for weight loss and my after, surgery.
35    Urrm it is in two days on January eleventh. Umm let me tell you a little
36    bit about myself. Single mum, several children. Three of them. I love
37    the Lord with all my heart, and  without him I’m nothing so urm also
38    I’m making this video as way for me to learn about myself and to also
39    to document my experience and hopefully this video will also and all
40    the future videos will help someone else who is maybe thinking about
41    their surgery or is going to have their surgery,  I did learn a lot from
42    others who have posted and I hope to be part of that community
43    because I think we do need to help each other out, this is like a life
44    journey. Urm, let me er tell ya I’ve been dieting er for most of my life
45    err I’ve been currently er on diets for fifteen years only to still be
46    morbidly obese and gaining ground to be malignant obese, which is
47    their new category urm so what I’m trying to tell you my BMI is a BM-
48    OHH NO! And that was one of the things that er really err started
49    having me think about doing the surgery. I guess my final straw about
50    having the surgery, occurred when I had to sit on the airplane, I was
51    squished up in the seat and I had to sit like this so none of my, fat or,
52    me, would flow into the other seat, um you know. It was just very
53    uncomfortable of course I had to use a extra belt to err tie myself in
54    urm. On the way back I decided to get the exit row so It was a little bit
55    more room and when I asked the stewardess ‘Excuse me stewardess,
56    may I have a belt?’ Usually they say ‘Uh yeah I’ll be right there’ and
57    most of the time they forget so then you’re embarrassed again urr and
58    you have to ask another one ‘may I have a belt’ and they say uh and to
59    my surprise I was told in the exit row you cannot have a belt. So at this
60    point I was on the line either I’d have to close this belt up or I find
61    another seat, how, embarrassing, let there was some tug and pulling on
62    the belt I uh managed to get it closed after sweating and taking about a
63    minute or two to do so I did my best so other passengers wouldn’t see
64    but I’m sure there was, they saw it but you know what you gonna do. I
65    managed to uh keep it buckled all the way to the flight and as soon as
66    we landed *SIGH* that’s what happened so at that point in time I
67    decided no more. I’m tired of chairs wobbling, my knees cracking, uh uh
68    my health is always in warranty I’m just fortunate I don’t have any
69    major health issues, but there are signs that they are coming. People on
70    the other hand also can be cruel, uh one time I was in Vegas and a lady
71    said ‘You’re too pretty to be as big as you are’ and I er at that point
72    didn’t know whether to hit her or thank her, I don’t know if that’s a
73    compliment or what. But people just say all kinda things to you, uh
74    fortunately I’m five foot nine so a lot of people don’t say them very
75    cruel to me other they might just get bopped. Anyway um, I, just want
76    anyone out there who hasn’t had surgery or who’s thinking about the
77    surgery just be fabulous no matter what size you are, I always believe in
78    trying to look nice and trying to look good and trying to represent,
79    there’s no need to wear sweats and hub dub, keep yourself and your
80    appearance up and you know a lot of times people will try to get to
81    know you and they will bypass the, fat. My next thing is that I want to
82    go ahead and tell you umm after I goo when I made my decision I went
83    ahead and took the steps to do what I needed to do to get the surgery
84    and then umm a couple of days ago I told my family. Um I told family
85    and friends, didn’t tell them a lot of details because uh a lot of times
86    people uh never know how they’ll react or whatever and you know
87    what, I just don’t need that extra added stress, my thing was I could tell
88    it straight up there’s no problem with me doing that but what’s the
89    point I mean I’m not going to change my decision about the surgery.
90    Um, speaking of the surgery I am scheduled and have been
91    approved and I will have my surgery on January eleventh and it’s
92    befitting as it’s my grandmothers 100th birthday, YEAH GRAMMY. And
93    um, like some people on the web are YouTube ‘I’m so excited, I can’t
94    wait’ well that’s not something for me this was something kinda a last
95    resort thing, I always like to think I can overcome and do anything, and I
96    have done that but unfortunately my weight is the one thing I haven’t
97    been able to conquer.
98    It’s the monkey on my back that has pitched or that it’s the monkey on
99    my back that has planted and grew a banana tree and hasn’t gone
100    anywhere, just sitting there uh growing. So, umm, I just wanted you to
101    know I’m gonna do my best to um uh be honest and report what’s
102    going on, I think information is the key. I mean after having done fifteen
103    years of having done lap disease and that your belly’s gone and lapped
104    over your belt or got booty do too, uh booty do is where your belly is
105    bigger than your booty be or do. Uh so anyway I’m just uh, trying to
106    keep everything in perspective and let people know what this is all
107    about. I uh hope to report next week and uh tell you everything went as
108    well as everything could go and uh I’ll be talking to you then. And until
109    then god bless and uh have a wonderful week.

Video 3:Amelia

110    Hey everybody, it’s Amelia and this is my first entry in my weight loss
111    video diary. Erm, I’m new to this so I’m just gonna (going) to talk, and
112    I’m not gonna edit much because I just wanna, want you  to see, you
113    know, the real deal and just yeah, and plus I don’t know how to edit
114    anyway, so that’s  probably why. Erm first of all, I am 32 years old, I live
115    in the South and I’ve lived here all my life. I’m not married but I’ve been
116    dating a guy named Joe for almost four years now and he is wonderful
117    and very supportive of me and my journey and I’m very very thankful to
118    have him in my life. erm we don’t have any children but we do have
119    one English bulldog named Kade and he is our baby. Now let me show
120    him to you, he’s sleeping, but let me let me show him to you. See my
121    baby, oh I woke him up. Hey baby. He’s like go away. He’s a mess, but
122    he’s my mess. so anyway erm, we do plan to get married in the future
123    but I just wanna be able to be healthier and you know, not have to be
124    standing up there going hurry and get this over with, I’m ‘bout to die,
125    you know on my feet, because I cant stand on my feet for long periods
126    or walk for long periods. so that’s gonna be on hold just until I get some
127    weight off and I’m a lot healthier and able to move. erm, I, ooo lets see,
128    some of the things that err I wanted to tell you was that um I weigh 538
129    pounds right now which is a lot yeah on my five foot fourish frame for
130    sure and yeah its it’s a lot and its hard to get around without pain and
131    you know being out of breath and I’m so tired of that. erm I haven’t had
132    a horrible life, my childhood wasn’t horrible but I mean it wasn’t
133    perfect because nothings perfect but you know I made sure that I had a
134    lot of friends cause I was like they’re gonna like me one way or the
135    other. erm, I’ve gotten myself involved in stuff you know of course I got
136    the teasing and all that stuff that you get if you’re different from
137    anybody and I even get a lot of it now cause I am at my heaviest and I
138    get a lot of you know the stares and the laughs and all that and yeah its
139    horrible and it, it bothers me, makes me angry more than anything but
140    I’ve just had to learn how to let it go just because id be angry all the
141    time you know but I, I’m just not used to it it as as bigger, excuse me, as
142    big as I’ve gotten, my life has gotten smaller if that makes any sense. I
143    do not like it, I am not used to this and I do not like it so I knew this was
144    the la last resort for me and the best choice for me at my, at this point
145    in time of my life. Erm just a little more about me erm I am a believer in
146    the Lord Jesus Christ and he is the most important thing in my life erm
147    and I am so glad and so thankful that He loves me and He loved me first
148    and that he be-bestows his grace upon me everyday or I’d be in big
149    trouble because I mess things up all the time but He does accept me as
150    his own anyway. And I – I just you know I don’t know what I would do
151    apart from Him. Erm I love the water because I can get around in the
152    water without a lot of pain and I can actually exercise in the water so
153    I’ve always loved the water. I love to read, Mary Higgins-Clark books
154    mostly. Erm I like movies and music and reality T.V and I love erm
155    spending time with my friends and my family and my pets and caring
156    for animals and I’m just, you know, I’m looking forward to doing a lot
157    more of those things. OH and I love Georgia bull football too, go dogs.
158    and that is Erm one thing that I really wanna go to some of these games
159    and right now I cannot do that, you know walking all that way and
160    walking up the steps, its just not possible and I really look forward to
161    going to them games, to the games, cause of a lot of times Joe will go
162    by himself and its just, its sad and I’m really really excited about that.
163    And lets see, what else? Erm, I live in the South and its hot during the
164    summers and I wanna just be comfortable in my skin and not be all hot
165    all the time and having to sit down. I wanna be able to go out and play
166    you know. So erm let me tell you a little bit more about my weight loss
167    journey so far, erm I have tried a lot of diets just as every body else and
168    have been on the roller coaster up and down and I just, I know that this
169    is the right choice for me and I started this journey back in 2006 just
170    with an information session. Erm I was supposed to have surgery
171    February 2007 but it fell through because the hospital told me a week
172    before I was gonna have to pay a large sum of money before my
173    surgery and that just want possible. Erm so I was devastated to say the
174    least but now I know that it just wasn’t the right time for me and so I
175    just, I didn’t know what to do, and I was just venting on a website the I
176    liked to get to which is bariatric eating. com and if you haven’t been
177    there, to me it’s the best place I’ve found for support, products,
178    information and all that stuff, so go there when you get a chance,
179    bariatric eating. com. err and so I was just telling people what
180    happened and a lady had messaged me and told me you know about a
181    doctor in Alabama and I was just kind of like Alabama, that’s just to far
182    you know and so we went down there and it, I was just like this is way
183    to far so we didn’t even stay for the session or anything just stayed
184    overnight, came home. Erm so I just kinda put it off and I was just trying
185    to figure out what else I was gonna do I looked at a few more doctors
186    you know and the thing just kept, the doctor Freeman in Anniston
187    Alabama just kept coming up you know so I decided ok I’ll go to the
188    sessions and do the whole thing you know and see what happens. So in
189    October of last year err I went to the information session and had some
190    tests done and I knew that was the place that was the place I was
191    supposed to be. Uh even though its four hours away its just, it’s good
192    knowing you’re in the right place you know erm the doctor himself is a
193    Christian and he always has done erm had the gastric bypass done
194    himself and had a lot of success in his life with that and in his practice
195    so I really really love his staff and himself and so I think it’s a very very
196    good thing that I’m going there. Erm so I’ve done all my clearances, I
197    had to do them over again which is understandable but I’ve been
198    cleared by the pulmonologist, the cardiologist and (oh the TV come
199    back on hold on a second) the cardiologist and the, the psych, I’ve had a
200    psych clearance believe it or not I was cleared, but I just finished the
201    pulmonology clearance this past week and so I should be getting my
202    surgery date. err I talked to one of the ladies yesterday and she said it
203    should be the second week in April which is not far away so I’m really
204    excited about that but I will let you guys know as soon as I find out the
205    date for sure and I’m just, I’m super excited about this whole cause and
206    this whole journey erm sure I’m nervous but it gonna be good. It’s
207    gonna take a lot of hard work I know that but I’m up for it and erm, I’m
208    doing this diary for myself first erm because I think it’ll be therapeutic
209    and so I can see my changes and my thought process and I can you
210    know, have somebody to talk to or talk at in this case and hopefully in
211    the process it’ll help somebody else maybe who has a lot to, a lot of
212    weight to lose as I do. Erm and I just hope maybe it could encourage to
213    see that they can do it, we can do it, we can do it together, and we can
214    get healthy and live a longer, happier life. So that’s all for now and I just
215    wantedto thank you for watching and I’ll talk again soon, bye bye.

Video 4: Mike
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBuINtRL5D0&feature

216    Hello everybody my name’s, err Mike. I live in York in west Yorkshire in
217    England and I am putting a video diary together to cover my bariatric
218    surgery, urrrm, I’ve actually got the funding for it here’s the letter, as
219    you can see which basically states that as of today, the 3rd of Feb
220    funding has been approved and I can go ahead and get my surgery
221    probably in around 6-8 maybe 10 weeks depending on the waiting list.
222    Errmm so I’ll go and I’ve thinking about this for a long time, errm been
223    overweight  most of my life currently weighing at 340 pounds
224    something like that, the heaviest I’ve ever been, spent the last  2 or 3
225    years with constant back ache, problem with my joints, knees and
226    ankles. Sleeping is a complete nightmare.  Which I’m sure my partner
227    Reanne will agree, got a mild case of sleep apnea, Which err you know
228    will be cured if the weight loss programme goes ahead, so you know it’s
229    basically a change of lifestyle for me. Err love my food. Always have,
230    don’t eat massive amounts of it just the wrong stuff, bread pastries
231    fried food, takeaway. Ran a pub for a year and in that environment you
232    basically just grab food when  you can you eat when you can because
233    your busy and more often than not it’s from the kitchen which is usually
234    deep fried. Last year or so I must have put a stone on quite easily, and
235    err and it’s got to stop. I’m 47, I’ve had no heart problems, but it err
236    runs in the family and I don’t want to be a victim of another heart
237    attack in the family, so I’ve decided now is the time before I’m 50, get
238    this sorted out, restart a new life with a new body, same body but
239    physically altered so that I can’t spend the next 20 years like the last 20
240    years which is unhappy. People think optimistic outgoing maybe it’s just
241    some kind of disguise to front but at the end of the day I don’t want to
242    be 65 and laid out on a bed with a err broken back discs unable to move
243    around, err so it gonna have to be an err drastic step and this is why I’m
244    going for, so I’m gonna give you updates right through till surgery day
245    err and hopefully you will tune in and err I’ve seen plenty of other video
246    diaries mainly female but there are some good male diaries to be seen
247    and they have inspired me a lot err and I’d like to think that mine will
248    be on their to do the same, so fingers crossed next thing is to go on the
249    waiting list to get a day and then take it from there will be touch with
250    that next. Cheerio.

Video 5: Mrs Iola

251    Hello YouTube my name’s Mrs. lola and I’m from Liverpool in the UK.
252    I’ve decided to come on to YouTube and err put some videos up just to
253    sort of talk about my plans to have gastric band surgery, err next
254    month, errmm you’re probably all thinking I’m mad but I’m actually
255    flying over  to Brussels  I’m going abroad to do it as it is an awful lot
256    cheaper about 4000 pounds cheaper, err I’m flying over to Brussels on
257    the 22nd of December., my surgery is on the 23rd of December,  and
258    I’m flying home on Christmas eve a day early actually but I you know
259    want to be home for Christmas so errmm, you know yer so well yer I
260    am mad but errmm the next time I’ll be able to do will be the summer
261    because of my job. So errmm that’s sort of like why I’m doing what I’m
262    doing at the time of year. I’ve always, always, always had a  weight
263    problem and from the age of about 4 or 5 errmm when I went to school
264    I kinda realised that I was fat, because you know I was called fat, I’ve
265    always realised I am bigger than….than your average female errmm I’m
266    tall(beep) I’m about 5 foot 11 tall (laughs) that’s my dinner cooking
267    there, I’m about 5 foot 11 tall and I weigh roughly about 18 stone 5 at
268    the moment  so my bmi is about 37 so I am sort of you know obese I
269    hate that word it’s such a revolting word I feel like overweight is  so
270    much nicer then obese it’s just such a horrible  horrible word but
271    anyhow I’m going over too do it. I’ve got a couple of reasons why I’m
272    doing this, obviously it would be ridiculous and errmm I would be in
273    complete denial if I didn’t say I was doing it for vanity reason, I have
274    lost weight before but I’ve never been in healthy weight 1range, you
275    know I’ve lost maybe say 3 and half stone what’s that in pounds let’s
276    have a little think.about that 42….49-50.. 49 pounds before today and I
277    felt so much better about myself I really have and I feel more attractive,
278    because you know my facial features and things like that slimmed down
279    and I could fit into nicer clothes and I could go out with confidence, I
280    would be lying if I said there wasn’t a vanity aspect to me getting the
281    surgery, errmm however the primary ermmm reason for me wanting to
282    do this is for my health errmm. My mom is extremely slim she has
283    never had a problem with her weight at all during her life and yet she
284    has cholesterol, you know she never ever had to think about what she
285    wanted to eat when she was younger, if she wanted.to have a cream
286    cake she ate a cream cake, ermmm but unfortunately I take after my
287    dad’s side of the family and I carry weight, I’m an apple shape, I have a
288    huge midriff and stomach, and fortunately, I mean touch wood I don’t
289    have that many sort of health, sort of weight related issues. At the
290    moment, but you know I mean further down the line in years to come
291    who’s to say these things won’t happen to me, I do you know get a little
292    out of breath, I damaged my knee  a few years ago on holiday and that
293    occasionally still twinges and things like that. But errmm, well what can
294    I say I just feel that I want to do it now and also having no brothers and
295    sister you know I mean I’m gonna need to be there to look after my
296    folks when I’m older and I don’t want my health to get in the way of
297    looking after my mom. So there are sort of you know several reasons
298    there why… why I do want too so this. As I say it’s probably , 1st of
299    December tomorrow, so it just over 3 weeks  till I actually leave for
300    Belgium, errmm Brussels and have the actual surgery, I am going to
301    document umm just any thoughts or feelings  that I have got about the
302    procedure that am actually going to sort  about to go through. Errmm
303    also the sort pre-op diet and everything that happens after that and
304    obviously ill keep you posted on my weight loss. I would like to lose
305    probably about 7 stone which is…… probably about 100 pounds maybe
306    slightly less than a 100 pounds for those of you tuning in from the us, so
307    about 100 pounds in weight ideal, I realise that the band doesn’t always
308    help you get to goal err and I know that it is just a tool cause I’ve
309    done.an awful lot of reading I’ve looked at lot of people on YouTube on
310    things like that like Mrs. Gigi, HELLO MISS GIGI. Err and things like that. I
311    have sort of made, err  spent time researching these things and I have
312    bought the book ‘weightloss for dummies’ and err stuff like that so I
313    have sort of done a lot of investigation into this and I am totally decided
314    this is what I want to do and you know that its right for me. I don’t think
315    there is a great deal of us from UK actually that a posting on YouTube
316    about this threes an awful lot of people in America since it’s become
317    more popular over there other then the gastric bypass, but errmm I
318    think there probably only gonna be me there’s Daniele cheers, there’s
319    missgigi and there’s Josie may so they are the people I have seen on
320    here that are in the uk but as I say I’m gonna try and keep you posted
321    errmm and just sort of let you know how things go. Errmm just errmm
322    well I just don’t have anything else but just to let you that I am gonna
323    be here and giving you all the gory details. Alright thank you so much
324    for watching take care and I’m gonna speak to you very soon.
